Take Action NOW to Ban Fox Hunting!

On May 27th 2025, Ruth Coppinger TD introduced the ‘Animal Health and Welfare (Banon Fox Hunting) Bill 2025’ at First Stage in the Dáil. Notably, Independent Ireland and Sinn Fein opposed even this initial step – an unprecedented move to stifle democracy and block discussion, as a First Stage is purely procedural and does not involve debate or a vote on the bill’s content. Fortunately, the bill passed its First Stage vote the next day, and a Second Stage debate – and ultimately a final vote -are expected in the coming months. However, the real challenge lies ahead because we now know that Sinn Fein, Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil will invoke the party whip to vote against the bill when it reaches the next stage.

We need you to lobby Sinn Fein, Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil for a free vote on this bill, meaning each TD will get a ‘lot of conscience’ and the party whip would not be imposed. This would mean the bill would have a much greater chance of passing and becoming law!

WHY SHOULD WE BAN FOX HUNTING IN IRELAND?

There are 42 registered foxhound packs in Ireland, active from November until April, terrorising and shredding foxes to bits for fun. Although fox hunting started here as a colonial ‘sport’, England, Scotland and Wales have long since banned this barbaric activity. Ireland is shamefully falling behind by allowing this disgusting practice to remain legal, despite public support for a ban.

Please help us save foxes by joining our campaign and lobbying your local TDs today – below is a sample letter and list of TDs that we need your help putting pressure on!

SAMPLE LETTER & EMAIL LIST:

“Dear TD,

I am writing to implore you to vote in support of Ruth Coppinger TD’s bill to ban fox hunting, when it progresses to Second Stage in the Dáil.

Your party has previously stated that it is in FAVOUR of cruel bloodsports like fox hunting, however, many individual TDs in your party are opposed to animal cruelty and so I would urge you to discuss and seek a free vote when the time comes, and not allow the party whip be used on this bill.

Fox hunting is cruel, barbaric and archaic – an activity that our former British colonisers (who introduced fox hunting here) have long since banned.

Over 70% of the public are in favour of a ban on bloodsports, it’s time politicians progressed on this too.

Thank you for your time, I look forward to hearing from you,

NAME & COUNTY “
